I. Read the following statements.
Write C if the statement is completely correct and write W whenever the statement is contextually wrong in your answer sheet.
- There are forty four English speech sounds that can be grouped into 3 types. Those are consonants, vowels and diphthongs.
- In the production of consonants, the obstruction of the out-going air is made by the two articulators which are situated in the mouth cavity.
- According to the function, the human speech organs are distinguished into three parts, namely: articulators, phonator and initiator.
- Vowel sounds are called oral because when they are produced by the speech organs, the vocal cords are always in the vibration.
- Whereas in the production of consonant sounds, the vocal cords are never made into vibration.
- The classification of vowel sounds is based on the following three variables: a) the part of the tongue which is raised; b) the tongue height, and c). the position of lips.
- Vowels / u: /, /ʊ/, belong to back vowels because when we produce those vowels the tongue is raised in the high position.
- On the other way, the vowel sounds /ə/ and /ə:/ are called central vowels because in the production of which the central part of the tounge is raised.
- In the consonant production there must be some obstruction in the mouth cavity. The point at which the two articulators are close or touching each other is called the manner of obstruction or articulation.
- Two phonemes go in pairs whenever phonetically they have the same place and manner of articulation.
- Segmental features refer to the phonemes which are arranged in sequential order in an utterance or words.
- The word “joke” is composed of five segmentals or phonemes, as it is written in phonetic transcription: /d ʒəʊ k/
- In producing English vowels, the airstream doesn’t go out through the nose but it passes out through the mouth cavity, that is why vowel sounds are called oral.
