Brahui Texts: Glossed and Translated Short Stories and Folktales

Abstract

Brahui is commonly written in the Perso-Arabic script (see b below). Practically all Brahui publications are written in this script. There is also a Roman-based orthography, Brolikva, standardized by a committee of writers including Liaquat Ali (see c below). Table 1 shows the phonemes of Brahui, and how they are transcribed in this book. In this book, we use our own system of transcription in which retroflex consonants are marked with a dot underneath and long /a, i, u/ are marked with a macron, following the romanization convention of South Asian languages.
