Man Of The World

I've loved and hated BR540. I've owned it and sold it on numerous occasions. I smell it and It's various clones almost everywhere I go. But I can't help but smile when I smell it. For a almost chemical based fragrance it's a fantastic achievement.

Comparison of the EdP and the Extrait

I smelled both of these a long time ago. Wrote down a lot of notes, decided I wasn’t happy with what I had to say, so I put them away with the intent on coming back a long time later. This time around, I get both perfumes better, and I can keep my thoughts more succinct and clear (unlike the perfumes). So, here we go.

On the one hand, the materials used aren’t of particularly good quality and aren’t handled with particularly good technical care. However, on the other hand, they/it are quite interesting in a sort of “wth” way.

Candied florals, so says the lot. I smell cherries of the Luxardo variety, lots of them. This opening is stickier and sweeter in the extrait, preferring a thicker presentation to the EdP’s lighter-weight and more diffusive character. The extrait immediately goes to a stiff, woody saffron amplified by a huge amount of metallic, bitter, cyanide almonds. The EdP does too, but the almond note dialed back significantly, and it’s much more pliant and soft since it gives indolic jasmine more room to play around than the Extrait. The final skin scent is a synthetic musky wood and ambergris concoction in both, but they keep to their separate personalities: stiff and thick in the Extrait, softer and more pliant in the EdP.

Both perfumes are a morass of cheap synthetics, to expound upon what I mentioned early on. Nothing really breathes with a life, voice, or personality of its own, yet somehow in this morass there is a clarity too - like a kaleidoscope spinning so fast it appears to stand still and blur the different shapes and colors it’s trying to present into an indistinguishable and solid mosaic. Which is better, the Extrait or the EdP? I don’t know, that’s up to you. I prefer the EdP because I feel as though I can see what the kaleidoscope is doing a bit more clearly, and its softer and more pliant presentation is more personable compared to the Extrait’s rigid and unforgiving texture. The Extrait is every note of the EdP but stronger and thicker, and not much more besides, though significantly more expensive. BR540 in both forms are quite unique, and as I said, cheap to make, and has won a huge number of fans - leading to many, many dupes and attempts by other brands to steal a slice from MFK’s BR pie. But, I don’t care for it. It doesn’t smell good, and it’s not art; I need a perfume to be one or the other, or both, for it to go into my collection. However, I will recognize BR540 anywhere and everywhere over anything else, so that must say something positive about it.

When I spray this on a tissue or paper strip, I smell the deliciously sweet, well blended, cakelike floral that everyone raves for. When I spray it on myself, however, the cedar (or fir? or ??) morphs into a sharp-fanged beast. Resinous and flat, I had a headache as it progressed. I don't think the perfume is the problem- it's surely me. So unfortunate that the interaction with my skin chemistry became antagonistic. I may use this for home or clothing fragrance, since it is so beautiful on its own.

In Perfumes the Guide, Tanya Sanchez likened Diorella to Vietnamese beef salad.

In that case, this must be a Big Mac and large Coke.

Lots of fruit and florals with really good projection. I only sprayed a few sample sprays and kept catching whiffs for hours and I liked what I smelled. Wife said I smelled "too feminine" at first but then, later on said I smelled like "birthday cake". Best way to describe it is cotton candy flowers

So, , I've had a sample of the BR540 Extrait and I will say that it is a hit in my opinion. Although, many would say otherwise, the Eau de Parfum is very similar as I have tested both side-by-side. (I am aware that some reviews suggests that they are very different.) Again, I did a side-by-side test of them and found that they are very similar in style, smell, and projection. This fragrance and the Extrait hold this indelible sweet aroma, with slight cedar and musk in the background, along with the amazing saffron leading the charge. The cotton candy affinity others spoke of is there, however, not what I come in contact with at first. My wife, however, noticed this cotton candy vibe right away! I don't get dentist office vibes that others have mentioned. Overall, a nice fragrance to purchase and have in the collection.
