PUBLISHERS NOTE

The late Mr. SIMON ALEXANDER HEWAVITARANE, who in his life time had begun to publish the TRIPITAKA, left a bequest for its completion after his death. He died suddenly on 17th January 1913 and in accordance with his wishes his Trustees had published the Commentaries on the Text in 49 volumes. After seventy years these books are no longer readily available.

His widow Mrs. SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE who passed away on 10th January 1982 at the age of 94, had prior to her death, created the SOMAWATI HEWAVITARANE TRUST to carry on the good work started by her late husband and bequeathed her entire estate to this Trust.

We the Trustees of the Somawati Hewavitarane Trust, having seen the need to re-print the Commentaries, have undertaken this task to help both the student and teacher of the Dhamma and in the hope that this act of ours will help to preserve the Noble Teachings of the Blessed One for the benefit of the future generations and thereby prolong the life of the Buddha Sasana by many more thousands of years.

May the fruits of this meritorious act help the late Simon Alexander Hewavitarane and Somawati Hewavitarane Mahs Upasikawa in Sansara and towards their final attainment of Nibbana.

PREFATORY NOTE

With this Volume of the Udana Attha Katha I have the pleasure to place before the public the Sixth of the Series of the Simon Hewavitarne Bequest. The learned Editor of this work is Bihalpola Devsrakkhita Nayaka Thero of the North Western Province and Vice Principal of the Vidyodaya College. This work was originally entrusted to Gonagala Siddatha. Thero the Principal of Saddbammodaya Pirivena. Owing to press of work he could only supply me with the transcript from which this edition has been done. Besides the MSS used for this edition the transcript supplied by Gonagala Siddatha Thero has been of the greatest assistance in the present edition.

The 7th Anniversary of the death of Simon Hewavitarne falls on the 17th January and this Volume will be the ‘Mataka dana’ (anniversary gift) to the Theros who will be present at the alms- giving given on the occasion.

The Sutta Nipata Commentary and the Visuddhi Magga are completed except for the indexes and will soon be out. The Netti Prakarana Atta-katha is well in hand as well as the Maha Niddesa.

Morontuduve Dhammananda Thero and Welipitiye Devananda Thero have been appointed to work in the Committee in place of the late M. Chandajoti Thero and Suriyagoda Sumangala Thero who has left for England to study at the Oxford University.

The cost of publication up to end of December 1919 is Rs. 35791-57.
